From international student to registered migration agent
I came to Australia to study, looked for work after graduating and prepared visa applications of my own. I remember the uncertainty of waiting and planning while a visa expiry approaches. That experience informs how I explain the process, including details that may seem familiar to someone working in migration but are new to a client.
I grew up in Vietnam and studied international business economics in Ho Chi Minh City, then lived and studied in Japan before completing a Master of Professional Accounting in Melbourne. My work has included accounting, translation, English teaching and digital media. Alongside those changes were my own visa applications and the need to understand how the rules affected the plans I could make.
I saw how inaccurate or incomplete advice could cost people time and require an application to be prepared again. That led me to study migration law formally. I completed a Graduate Diploma of Migration Law and Practice at UTS, followed by a Master of Australian Migration Law and Practice at ACU, and registered to provide immigration assistance.
Huy Nguyen Education and Migration is a small practice in Footscray, working with Vietnamese and international clients in Australia and overseas. I directly handle assessment, preparation and follow-up within the scope agreed with each client.
How I work
Accounting taught me to check figures against their supporting records. Translation made me attentive to words that can change a statement's meaning. Teaching reminded me that an explanation is useful when the person hearing it can understand and use it. Those habits remain part of my migration work.
- Explain the requirements and limitations. If an option is not currently supported, I explain why and identify what else needs checking before you proceed.
- Work from facts and evidence. We identify the records that support each point and make clear where something remains unsubstantiated.
- Review previous applications. New information is considered alongside earlier records, with questions asked to understand any differences.
- Make sure you understand what you confirm. You review statements in an appropriate language and correct inaccurate details before the material is used.
Registration and standards
I am a Registered Migration Agent, number 2318079, registered with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA). Registered agents are bound by the Migration Agents Code of Conduct, must hold professional indemnity insurance, complete continuing professional development every year, and can be checked on the public register. Anyone giving immigration assistance in Australia for a fee must be registered or be an Australian legal practitioner; if you are unsure who is advising you, check the register.
Consultations are available in person in Footscray or online, in English or Vietnamese.

Beyond migration
Alongside migration work, I teach Vietnamese–English NAATI CCL preparation and continue studying psychology and education. I am interested in how people learn and adjust to change. In practice, that means making time to listen and explain the process so clients understand what they are preparing for.
